Cora's Story
Anyone who knows Cora knows she has been a ball of energy and fierceness since she was a baby. She was never a fan of sleeping through the night, and we knew she would give us a run for our money. We laughed at and feared all the ways she would cause trouble and how much she would test us as she grew older.
This is until the day we heard the words, “we found a large tumor”. Our entire world stopped at this moment - thinking of losing our wild child, her sister losing her best friend, and how we were going to get Cora through what was to come. We actually started to appreciate all the sleepless nights as it was extra time we had with her. We were told of all the side effects and how much treatment could slow Cora down. We worried about all the medical possibilities that could ensue and quickly had to prepare for a tough journey.
However, Cora had other plans in mind. Instead of us having to worry about how to get her through treatment, she got us through it all. She flew through her chemotherapy/
immunotherapy with minimal effects. She did have a few days when she didn’t feel well, and we had plenty of tears and anxiety. But for the most part, she laughed, played and kept up with her big sister and cousins. All the CHOP nurses and doctors know her as the little girl who roams the halls with her baby stroller and purse. A little girl who exclaimed, “Where’s me hair?!” about 2 months after she lost her hair. To Cora, she is a “regular” toddler outside of treatment. A toddler who loves life and is always able to see the positives of her hospital stays or appointments.
Cora's best friend is her sister, Sophia. She looks up to her and copies everything she does. Sophia has also managed the unthinkable as her sister battles cancer. The pictures that were captured are of Cora and Sophia celebrating Sophia's 6th birthday. We were fortunate to be home as a family to celebrate this day!
Along with Cora’s positive spirit, organizations like PCFLV have helped get us through this cancer journey. We were met by a few members of the organization and were offered a listening ear, help with gas/groceries, and simply support through a pediatric cancer diagnosis. Cora and her sister love all the goodies PCFLV has given our family. She hit it off right away playing and giggling with one of the PCFLV staff while at an outpatient LVHN appointment. We are so appreciative of the support and sense of community we have found within PCFLV.
While Cora’s journey is far from over, this journey has shown us how strong, resilient, and absolutely amazing kids are. Cora and other kids battling cancer will forever be our greatest inspiration. These kids must endure things no one should ever have to. And for Cora, she has overcome so much at such a small age and did so with the utmost perseverance. Because of her, we remain hopeful and positive the rest of her treatment will get us through and one day be cancer-free. Until then, we will keep smiling, singing, dancing and roaming the halls with our crazy Cora.
