30 DAYS/30 STORIES® 2020

September 15th

Aurora

It was the evening of my husband's 37th birthday when we received the phone call that our daughter, Aurora needed to be admitted into the hospital. Time moved so quickly after that moment…tests, biopsies, and more tests…until time stood still on April 18, 2019, when we heard “Your daughter has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a form of blood cancer”. Nothing remotely here on Earth can prepare you to hear those words. My heart sank and broke in one single sentence.

The next 6 months were the hardest months of our family's life. Our hearts broke and we lost who we were. I personally struggled emotionally, physically and mentally.  Hearing your child has cancer destroys the person you were before cancer. PCFLV quickly came to my rescue and to the rescue of other parents going through the same thoughts and feelings as I was shortly after Aurora was diagnosed. PCFLV provided a free support group for all local cancer parents. There is something so comforting about having a safe environment with parents that understand your heart 100% on topics in your life.

PCFLV also provided care for our other kiddos to make this possible. They provided childcare right at the hospital campus, including such fun activities that our kids truly enjoyed. PCFLV support group has taught us a lot. It has taught us a lot about ourselves, our marriage and our family’s journey with cancer. These parents have given us an emotional support system free of judgement, filled with love and a sense of unity…and that is something a family living with cancer needs, and we are so grateful that PCFLV was able to provide this for our families free.

Aurora is now 16 months into her chemotherapy treatments and fights with an unbelievable strength. There is this inspirational innocence in the way she holds herself together every poke, test, infusion, physical therapy appointment and sedation. She is what superheroes are born of…a resilient heart that lives and breathes perseverance. She continues to fight every day, taking her chemotherapy treatments and each day is a day closer to Summer 2021. A season when we pray for full remission and completion of treatment.
